Let me start off by saying that I have been hunting with outfitters for the last 10 years and have been to Texas 3 times, Illinois twice, Wyoming 3 times, Nebraska, Iowa, New Brunswick-Canada, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Kansas 5 times. I have been on hunts where I have spent 11 hrs. a day for 6 days in 0 degree F weather and seen a total of 6 deer for the week with 2 of the 6 being spiked bucks and then on another hunt where 130-140 class deer were common. I have seen all types of operations. I have to say the best accommodations were in Wyoming but the best deer hunting was in Kansas at Chikaskia Outfitters and since I go for the deer hunting and not the hunting lodge and food I would rate Chikaskia Outfitters in Kansas as number 1 place to go. That is why I have been there for two years in a row and have rebooked for 2007. Dave has the deer (not just 130-140 range, but there are quite a few 170 and above deer that you have a realistic chance of getting a shot at), and he has the knowledge to set his hunters up in the right place with the right circumstances. I’ve been to operations in Illinois and Texas where they run as many hunters through as possible. Sure some get good deer but many more are just paying their money and going home without the outfitter caring at all about their hunt. Dave cares whether his hunters see the deer they are paying him to see and does his homework beforehand to give you your best shot at a monster Kansas deer. To put it simply, Dave has the deer, he has more than enough land to accommodate the number of hunters he takes each season, he has the knowledge and experience on how to hunt mature bucks, and most of all he really cares how your hunt goes. He is in this because deer hunting has been his life since he was a young boy and when he is glassing deer and setting stands in preparation for a hunt, he is enjoying the hunt along with you and not just running clients through to get as much money as he can. His hunts are more of a personal nature and he does not take a lot of hunters per year and this ensures everyone has a great chance at a great deer. I’d rather pay Dave a little more than go on 2 hunts where I don’t get personal attention and it is all left up to luck as to whether I get a shot than knowledge and solid preparation. Last year I took a 13 point which was a main frame 12 and my hunting buddy took a tall 8 point which scored in the upper 150’s. Dave had this deer all scouted out for him and within the first 10 minutes of being on the stand the first night my friend spotted the deer and after watching him get closer and closer shot him at about 60 yards with his muzzleloader. He was in a bachelor group with 6 or 7 other bucks. That’s another thing that I like about Dave. He has his stands set up so your shot is realistic for the weapon you are hunting with. I’ve been to places where I would see a lot of deer in the distance but the stands were set so you would see but not be close enough to take a shot you could feel good about. One outfitter put his stands 200 yards from the corn piles and said 200 yards was close enough to shoot with an open sighted muzzleloader (scopes are not allowed during Kansas early muzzy season). If you are looking to get that deer of a lifetime book with Dave and then do your part by practicing with the weapon you will use so you come prepared to carry out your end of the bargain because I assure you Dave will carry out his end and do the best by you that he can. I can’t wait for September so I can go back to Kansas and see what comes out in the alfalfa field this year. Sue Keiser | |
