I went on my first hunt with Chickaskia Outfitters last year (fall 05). I have hunted Whitetail since I was 16 (I'm now 31) and was looking to hunt some new, quality, turf. After checking out many different outfits I decided on Chickaskia. I was not disappointed. Dave has a unique set up in that he has many different plots of land spread over large areas. This enables him to do things others can't. As anyone knows true fair chase hunting is never totally predictable, by having such a variety of hunting areas Dave can react to changes in conditions, deer behavior or hunter preferences. The end result is more deer seen by the hunter and a better overall experience. I didn't care how many deer I saw during my hunt. I wanted a FAIR CHASE hunt where if I did my part I would have a reasonable chance at a trophy deer. I saw more deer in one sit then I had seen in many entire seasons. I had re booked for next year before ever pulling my bowstring. My rule was during the first 3 days the buck needed to floor me to shoot. I was having a hard time keeping to it, by day 2 I had already passed up on 2 wall hangers and many more respectable deer. I was beginning to think that I may be seeing that 11 pointer I passed up in my dreams. Then I was floored. At around 8:30 in the morning after a brief rattling session the largest deer I had ever seen still standing stepped out from the trees. It looked like it was wearing a crown of driftwood on its head and all I could think of was "just keep it cool for the next few minutes". I had gotten some unwanted attention from a group of Does and he was headed right where they were all focused, my tree. At about 15 yards he hit my sent drag and turned. At about 27 yards he gave me the quartering away shot I needed; I drew, dropped the string, and watched the arrow slam home. The hunt had exceeded all my expectations and now I had finished it with a record book 163 inch buck. He sported 14 in G2's and 12 in G3's with a beautifully curving main beam he was amazing! I did nothing exceptional, what was exceptional was the area I was hunting and the knowledge of that area imparted to me by Dave. I knew how the deer were apt to move and how the winds were most likely to be blowing. He also told me what might happen if the wind threw a curve ball. With this knowledge I was able to set out my scent drags in a way that probably saved my hunt. I feel comfortable enough in recommending this hunt that I have authorized Dave to give out my phone number to anyone wanting a reference. I know this can be a big decision so feel free to give me a call. Good luck! . John Sheppard | |
